Land Rover has been announced as a major sponsor of the GIO 2018 IWRF Wheelchair Rugby World Championship (2018 WRWC). This is a world first as Land Rover becomes a global partner of both the 2019 Rugby World Cup and the Wheelchair Rugby World Championship.
The 2018 WRWC will see the best para-sport athletes competing and showcasing the excitement and intensity of wheelchair rugby. This year’s event is being held in Sydney Olympic Park, Australia between 5 - 10 August. It is the largest elite sporting event for athletes with a disability to be held in Sydney since the 2000 Paralympic Games.
There are 12 nations competing in the 2018 WRWC: Australia, Canada, Colombia, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, Poland, Sweden and the USA. The first game of the tournament will see Australia face New Zealand.
The sponsorship extends Land Rover’s 20-year strong support of rugby from grassroots to elite level, following highly-successful worldwide partnerships of Rugby World Cup 2011 and 2015.
Land Rover’s Head of Global Brand and Partnerships, Laura Wood, said “We are thrilled to be sponsoring the GIO 2018 IWRF Wheelchair Rugby World Championships. Land Rover has supported rugby globally for many years and so it is fitting that we are the first company to be a global partner of both these pinnacle events.”
World Rugby Chief Executive Officer, Brett Gosper, commented: “It is fantastic that Land Rover, a long-standing and proactive supporter of rugby globally and a Rugby World Cup Worldwide Partner, has been confirmed as a 2018 IWRF Wheelchair Rugby World Championship sponsor. World Rugby and the IRWF share a close and strong association and this deal reflects our wider commitment to furthering the bond between all forms of rugby. I would like to wish the IWRF, Land Rover and all the participants a superb World Championship.”
Steve Loader, Chair of the 2018 WRWC Organising Committee is pleased to fulfil a goal of obtaining a ‘partner link’ between the two peak Rugby events, “Land Rover’s support will enable the 2018 WRWC to showcase our event and highlights their worldwide support of rugby including partnership of Rugby World Cup in 2019.”
